Reaching 100 appearances for a club is a monumental achievement in rugby, and Tom Fussel has done just that for Yate Rugby. His journey with the club, marked by dedication, skill, and an unwavering passion for the game, is a testament to what makes Yate Rugby such a special place. As a player who has been with us through countless matches, victories, and challenges, Tom embodies the heart and soul of our club.
The Social Spark
For Tom, rugby has always been about more than just the game. “The social side of the sport is what got me hooked,” he says. “I’ve made a load of friends throughout the years.” This sense of camaraderie and connection is at the core of Tom’s rugby experience and has fuelled his commitment to the team.
Proudest Moments: Making History
Reflecting on his proudest moments, Tom highlights back-to-back wins in the Bristol District Leagues, an incredible feat considering Yate Rugby hasn’t even celebrated its 10th anniversary yet. “Those victories weren’t just about lifting trophies; they were about proving what this team is capable of,” he shares. Achievements like these have inspired Tom and his teammates to aim higher and push the boundaries of what’s possible for the club.
Building One Team, One Family
Ask anyone at Yate Rugby, and they’ll tell you the same thing: the club feels like family. Tom believes this culture is what sets Yate apart. “From academy players to the ladies’ team, we’re all part of one team. Club days bring everyone together, and that unity is what drives our success.” With a positive and welcoming atmosphere, Tom and his teammates foster an environment where players not only grow their skills but also build lasting friendships.
Matchdays: Where Hard Work Meets Passion
For Tom, matchdays are the highlight of the season. “It’s the best way to showcase the hard work we put in during training. Playing is the best way to learn, and we progress every week.” A standout moment for Tom and the team was their recent victory over Frampton 2s—a club with rich history and strong players. “It was an incredible feeling to see everyone’s hard work come together. That was, without a doubt, our best team performance.”
Leadership and Motivation
Tom credits much of the team’s energy and drive to lead coach Chris Moore. “Chris brings intensity and focus to every training session. His approach pushes everyone to give their best, whether it’s through skill drills or competitive game zones. That desire to outdo each other in training ultimately makes us stronger as a team.”
Eyes on the Future
Looking ahead, Tom’s goal for Yate Rugby is clear: promotion out of Gloucester 4. With a team that’s growing stronger and more cohesive each week, he’s confident in their potential to achieve this milestone. “This year feels special,” he says. “The hard work, the culture, and the bond we share—it’s all coming together to create something truly amazing.”
Celebrating 100 and Beyond
As Tom celebrates his 100th appearance, we take a moment to honour his incredible contributions to Yate Rugby. He’s more than just a player; he’s a leader, a role model, and a cornerstone of our community. Here’s to many more matches, victories, and unforgettable moments with Tom at the heart of our team.
