A Proper Test of Character!

There’s nothing quite like a good rugby challenge, and this weekend’s friendly against Bristol Harlequins certainly delivered! After last weekend’s result against Southmead, the Yate lads were buzzing for another opportunity to test themselves, and boy, did they get one.

Bristol Harlequins arrived with a game plan, plenty of pace, and some seriously impressive attacking lines. This was never going to be an easy afternoon, but Yate were ready to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.

And what a game it turned out to be!

Sticking to the Script

One of the biggest positives from the match was how well Yate stuck to their new structure for a good length of the game. The boys showed real discipline, working through the phases and giving themselves the opportunity to build pressure.

Even when things went a little off script, the team remained in control. That’s a really encouraging sign as the squad continues to develop and understand the new systems being introduced.

There were some excellent passages of rugby, with the team showing that when they get their structure right, they can cause plenty of problems for the opposition.

Defence That Refused to Fold

Now, let’s talk about the standout moment of the match.

Yate found themselves on the back foot, facing a very good Bristol Harlequins driving maul. This was the sort of situation where you need everyone pulling together, and the lads dug deep to hold it up.

It was a fantastic example of the defensive determination this squad is building. Against a quality outfit running hard and with purpose, Yate stood firm when it mattered most.

The defence was tested throughout the afternoon, but the boys kept working for each other, refusing to give up when the pressure came.

New Faces, Big Impact

A big welcome to Paul Wimpenny and Luke Savage, who both made their mark on the game.

Both players put in some great work around the pitch, but Luke deserves a special mention. Playing out of position in the scrum, he still managed to make a real impact, putting in a couple of big hits and showing plenty of determination.

That’s the sort of attitude we love to see at Yate Rugby — stepping up, taking on a challenge, and getting stuck in wherever the team needs you.

A Quality Opposition

Bristol Harlequins were a class outfit. They ran hard, hit some very good lines, and clearly came with a plan. They made Yate work for every bit of the game, and that’s exactly what you want from a friendly.

These are the matches that help teams grow. You get tested, you learn, and you find out where you need to improve.

And for Yate, there were plenty of positives to take away.

The Work Continues

There’s still plenty to work on in training, particularly getting more players comfortable and vocal in the pod shapes and moves.

Communication is going to be key as the squad continues to develop its structure. The more confident everyone becomes in their roles, the more dangerous Yate will be when moving the ball around the pitch.

But that’s what these games are all about — building, learning, and getting better together.

Whether it’s a big tackle, a great passage of play, or a tense final few minutes, having the Yate family behind you is something special.
