At Yate Rugby, our heartbeat comes from the passion and dedication of our leaders, and few embody that spirit better than Matt Davies, our Men’s Chairman. From his early days of playing rugby to leading our men’s team through countless triumphs, Matt’s story is one of camaraderie, hard work, and an unwavering love for the game. His vision and commitment have helped shape Yate Rugby into the thriving community it is today.
From Navy Rugby to Yate: A Journey of Passion
Matt’s rugby journey started early, playing for a local club up to the Colts age group. His love for the game continued as he played representative rugby in the Royal Navy. After leaving the Navy, fate brought him to Yate Rugby. “I joined Yate on day one, as a group of friends had started it up, and having left the Navy at that point, I was looking to get back into playing, so it was perfect timing,” Matt shares.
Matt’s love for Yate Rugby is infectious, and it’s clear that he feels part of something special. “What I love about Yate? Right now, we’ve got just shy of 60 men registered who regularly pull on the shirt. But it’s more than just rugby. There’s a bond between all members - we’re all friends, and we cultivate a family feel between the lads. That’s what makes this club different.”
Highlights That Define Yate Rugby
Looking back, Matt is filled with pride about the club’s milestones. “There have been so many highlights—our first-ever match against North Bristol, winning our first league match away at Avonmouth, and of course, lifting our first league title.” For Matt, these moments reflect Yate Rugby’s growth and resilience.
“I love seeing our men’s team grow stronger each year. We don’t have a ceiling - we can keep kicking on, getting stronger and stronger,” he says. It’s not just about the men’s side of the club, though. Matt is equally proud of the Academy and Ladies’ sides, which have flourished under the club’s ethos of community and growth.
A Vision for Growth
As the men’s team continues in there competitive season, Matt’s goals are ambitious but focused: “Our 1s and 2s are aiming to remain competitive in Gloucestershire 4 and B&D 2. We’re taking some scalps along the way. With 60 lads enjoying their rugby on Thursdays and Saturdays, we’re always looking to add to those numbers.”
The bond between the team is at the heart of this success. Matt explains, “Playing regularly together allows the team to grow at pace and become more in tune with each other. As that happens, performance levels rise.” This year’s influx of players, particularly for the 2s team, has been transformative. “The 2s lads are starting to gel and bond, and performances are improving every week. It’s been an exciting season so far, with so much more to come.”
A Rugby Family That Keeps Growing
But for Matt, Yate Rugby isn’t just about the men’s squad - it’s about the whole Yate Rugby family. He’s particularly proud of the Academy, and the journey of the Under 9s squad, where his daughter plays, brings him extra joy. "They’ve started full-contact tackling this year, and it’s been amazing to watch them embrace that transition from tag to tackling so well. The kids are a credit to their parents, and their coach Pete Thompson deserves a lot of praise.”
At Yate Rugby, we’re not just building rugby players - we’re building a community. A community that supports each other, grows together, and shares a passion for the sport that unites us all.
