Sometimes rugby gives you a result that feels pretty straightforward.
And sometimes you walk off the pitch thinking, “How did we not win that?”
This was definitely the latter.
Yate 1s travelled to Cleve for a hot and dusty contest and came away on the wrong side of a 26–15 scoreline, despite plenty of opportunities to take the game.
At full-time, the disappointment was obvious. This was a match the squad genuinely felt was there to be won.
🟨 A Busy Afternoon for the Referee
One of the more unusual features of the afternoon was the referee reaching for the yellow card four times.
Whether that was a sign of things to come or simply a one-off, it's certainly something Yate will need to take notice of.
Discipline once again proved costly, with penalties giving the referee opportunities to intervene and taking points and momentum away from Yate.
And when the margins are tight, those moments matter.
💪 Scrum Strength
There was, however, plenty to be positive about.
The Yate scrum was seriously strong.
Even with a number of personnel changes, the pack maintained its strength and provided a reliable platform throughout the game.
That was one area where Yate could take genuine confidence from the performance.
😤 So Many What-Ifs
The frustrating part was the number of opportunities that went begging.
Yate had three tries disallowed, while points were also missed from the tee.
Those are the moments that make a result like this particularly difficult to swallow.
The team also identified decision-making as an area to improve, particularly in key areas of the pitch. Choosing where to move the ball and, just as importantly, the quality of ball being delivered will be a major focus going forward.
When opportunities are there, Yate need to make sure they are making the right decisions to turn pressure into points.
🏉 Credit to Cleve
Credit must go to Cleve.
They were similar to the side Yate faced previously, but on this occasion they used their kicking game particularly well.
They kicked effectively for territory and chased those kicks better than Yate managed to deal with them.
Their familiarity with the width of their pitch also helped them at important moments, allowing them to make the most of the space and territory.

That support never goes unnoticed.
🔥 Take the Lessons and Go Again
It's easy to look at a 26–15 defeat and focus solely on the scoreline.
But this was a game where Yate know there was much more available.
The scrum was strong.
The opportunities were created.
The effort was there.
Now it's about becoming more disciplined, making better decisions in key areas and being more clinical when those chances arrive.
The disappointment will sting — and perhaps it should.
But the best response is to learn from it, put the work in and go again.
Hot. Dusty. Disappointing.
But there are lessons here, and plenty of rugby still to play. 💙💛🏉
