Well… if anyone was looking for a quiet afternoon of rugby, they definitely weren't at North Bristol!

The Yate 2s came away with a 43–38 victory in a seriously entertaining contest, but this was much more than just a high-scoring game. After promotion last season, the squad knew that 26/27 would demand another gear, and from the first whistle it was clear they were ready to empty the tank.

And by full-time?

There wasn't a player from 1 to 23 who hadn't given absolutely everything.

⚡ A Try Worth Watching Again

The standout moment came from a brilliant piece of skill involving Liam and Johan.

Liam spotted the opportunity and threaded a cross-field kick into the North Bristol 22.

Then came Johan.

He volleyed the ball into the air, caught it and somehow still managed to dive over the line for the try!

That's the sort of sequence that makes you wonder whether the players have been practising rugby or auditioning for a highlights reel.

An outstanding bit of skill and a fantastic finish.

💪 Forwards Doing the Damage

The Yate set piece was particularly impressive.

The forwards were clinical, especially at scrum time, giving the backs a strong platform to attack from.

And once the ball was in hand, the Yate backs weren't hanging around either.

Playing well on the gain line, they consistently beat the first defender or made valuable metres, keeping North Bristol under pressure and creating opportunities throughout the game.

😬 Then Things Got Interesting...

Because, as is often the case with Yate 2s, apparently winning comfortably wasn't enough!

North Bristol fought their way back into the contest, with a couple of pieces of individual brilliance seeing them take a two-point lead around the 60-minute mark.

Suddenly, the final 20 minutes became a battle of youth versus experience.

North Bristol brought plenty of youth and pace to the contest and used their 4G surface well, while Yate had to draw on experience, composure and the sheer determination to keep working.

And eventually, that experience edged it.

Five points was all that separated the sides at the final whistle.

43–38 to Yate.

🧱 Lessons to Take Forward

There were plenty of positives, but there is also work to do.

When Yate found themselves on the back foot and under pressure, the defensive organisation wasn't always where it needed to be.

The key learning will be recognising when to commit players to the ruck and when to fan out across the defensive line.

Those small decisions can make a huge difference in tight games — and this was certainly a tight game!

🤝 One to Twenty-Three

There were some excellent individual performances, but trying to pick out one or two players would be doing this team a disservice.

This was a complete squad performance from 1 to 23.

Everyone contributed.

Everyone emptied the tank.

And everyone played their part in getting Yate over the line.

That's exactly the sort of performance you want from a squad looking to step up following promotion.

A brilliant piece of skill from Liam and Johan.

A huge shift from 1 to 23.
