🌹 Rugby Rose: Yate Men Deliver a Brilliant 41–17 Victory at Ashley Down!

FULL-TIME: WIN
Ashley Down Old Boys 17–41 Yate Rugby
Well, well, well… now that's more like it! 🌹
Rugby Rose here, and I have to say, Saturday was a fantastic afternoon for Yate Rugby as the men travelled to Ashley Down Old Boys and returned with a convincing 41–17 victory.
But what impressed me most wasn't just the six tries or the final scoreline. It was the attitude, effort and togetherness that this team showed from the moment they walked into the changing rooms.
There was a real sense that this group meant business!
🔥 The Right Attitude from the First Whistle
There were plenty of nerves going into the game. Everyone knew how important it was to get that first win of the season, but underneath those nerves was a quiet confidence that the boys had what it took to get the job done.
And they certainly delivered!
From the changing rooms to the warm-up, right through to the final whistle, the attitude was spot on. The energy was there, the focus was there and, most importantly, the effort never dropped.
It was exactly the kind of performance the team had been working towards.
💥 Defence Wins Battles
One of the biggest positives from Saturday was the communication in defence.
The work the boys have been putting in at training is really starting to pay off. Players were talking, organising and working together, making it difficult for Ashley Down to find easy opportunities.
And when it came to individual performances, Evan was once again causing problems for anyone standing in front of him!
He seemed to have that extra half-second every time he got the ball, but my personal highlight was one absolutely crunching tackle in the first half. It certainly made an impression!
⚔️ The Moment the Game Was Won
Ashley Down were a well-drilled side, with some big carriers and strong tacklers. Playing on their fast, open pitch, they also looked to move the ball wide and make the most of their pace.
And they certainly made Yate work for it.
At 17–20, the game could have gone either way. This was the moment that really tested the boys, and the response was exactly what you'd want to see.
Rather than allowing the pressure to build, Yate dug in, stayed composed and kept the foot on the throttle.
The final 20 minutes were where the visitors really pulled away, turning a tight contest into a brilliant 41–17 victory.
That showed real character!
🧠 A Lesson for the Next Challenge
There was plenty to celebrate, but the boys have already identified something important to take into next week.
They have the ability to control the tempo of a game, and they don't need to force a score from every single phase.
Sometimes the best option is to be patient, build pressure, keep possession and wait for the right opportunity.
Knowing when to accelerate and when to take control is a huge part of developing as a team, and Saturday gave them a great example of just how important that can be.
⭐ Young DD Gets Stuck In!
It was also brilliant to see young DD getting involved and putting in some big carries.
Taking opportunities, getting involved and making an impact is exactly what we want to see, and it's great to see him stepping up and contributing to the team's performance.
🏆 Leading from the Front
A special mention goes to our award winners:
Man of the Match – Starry
Dave Vince – Award winner
Both led from the front from start to finish, setting the standard for those around them and making huge contributions to the team's performance.
A thoroughly deserved recognition for two players who helped drive the team forward!
💙💛 The Yate Family Makes Some Noise!
Now, I'm not sure whether it was the home side or the travelling support who had the louder voices on Saturday…
But I have a feeling there may have been more Yate supporters there than Ashley Down supporters!
As always, the #YateRugbyFamily turned out in force, bringing the noise, encouragement and plenty of positivity from the sidelines.
That support really does make a difference, and it's fantastic to see the wider Yate family getting behind the boys.
🌹 Rugby Rose's Final Whistle
The first win of the season is in the bag, and what a way to do it!
This was a performance built on attitude, communication, hard work and belief. The boys stayed together when the game was tight, showed composure when it mattered and finished the afternoon in style.
A huge congratulations to everyone involved — players, coaches and supporters.
The confidence will be growing, the smiles will be bigger and there's plenty to build on as the season continues.
And if I had to sum up Saturday in three words?
WIN. WIN. WIN. 🏉
Come on Yate! 💙💛
