Match Report - Pride, Positivity and Progression: Yate Rugby vs Bristol Harlequins

Rugby Rob’s Report: Yate Rugby vs Bristol Harlequins

Hello Yate Rugby family, Rugby Rob here, your roving reporter for the season! I’ll be bringing you the stories, the standout moments, and a little bit of behind-the-scenes flavour from both of our men’s teams throughout the year. And what better place to start than our pre-season clash against Bristol Harlequins?

A Debut to Remember

Every good game has a spark, and for me, the standout came from a young man making his debut, Keiran. Three chop tackles in three consecutive phases! That’s the kind of fearless defence that gets a whole team buzzing. He’s one to watch, and I, for one, am excited to see what he (and the rest of our new recruits) bring to the pitch this season.

The Return of a Familiar Face

It wasn’t just the new lads making headlines. Seeing Jamie Gamble back at the club — and back to full fitness, was a real highlight. He was immense in both attack and defence, showing why his presence is so important. With debutants and returning players all making positive impacts, you can feel that this squad is starting to take real shape.

The Squad and the Spirit

More than 25 players wanted and got game time, a brilliant problem to have! There was a real buzz before kick-off, that mix of excitement and nerves you only get on rugby days. We knew the opposition would be strong and the weather unforgiving, and by the final whistle, both those factors had left their mark. But here’s the thing: the pride in the effort and the positivity in the group were impossible to miss.

The Sideline Heroes

Now, I have to tip my cap to the supporters. Despite the rain, despite the travel, you turned up. And you made yourselves heard. Yate Rugby is built on family, and Saturday proved that again. Emma snapping photos, young Teddy running on water, Dan covering the medicals it’s those touches that make this club special. From the side-lines to the pitch, it really is one big team.

Testing Ourselves Against the Best

Pre-season is about learning and testing yourself. Facing a side like Bristol Harlequins, with their higher-league experience and consistency, was a brilliant challenge. For long stretches, we matched them blow for blow, which shows just how much progress this squad has made. Credit to Quins for their smart use of the conditions and their pressure game — they showed exactly why they’re a respected club.

Three Words That Sum It Up

If I had to wrap this one up in three words, it’s simple: Pride, Positivity, Progression. That’s what this game was about, and that’s what this season is about.

The Road Ahead

This is just the start. From what I saw on Saturday, Yate Rugby is building something very exciting. I’ll be right there all season, bringing you the stories, the standout moments, and hopefully a few laughs along the way. Stick with us — it’s going to be a journey worth following.

Until next time,

Rugby Rob
