The Yate Rugby Blog

This is only the second weekend for Me (Rugby Riley) as part of our match-reporting team, and honestly… this is incredible. What we’re building here at Yate Rugby is something special — energy, pride, and community all wrapped into one. And Riley couldn’t be more excited to be part of the team, bringing you all the action from our brilliant young players!

What a day for the Under 11s!

We had a fantastic turnout, and the team kicked things off with a warm-up that got everyone focused, fired up, and ready to play. You could feel the buzz — every single player excited to get stuck in.

Game 1 – Yate vs Dursley. A slightly slow start with the sun in their eyes and a pitch that wasn’t doing anyone any favours, but Yate knuckled down quickly. Some strong tackles, determined rucking, and real grit saw them grow into the game.

Game 2 – Yate vs Dursley (again!). With a team dropping out, we faced Dursley for the second time but this time Yate came out flying. Great catches, smart positioning, and much sharper organisation across the pitch. A strong performance against a tough side.

Game 3 – Yate vs Thornbury. The final match and the U11s were absolutely fired up. They went in strong, showing brilliant tackling, confident ball-handling, and some superb ripping. This one was a real 50/50 battle — both teams scoring great tries, both pushing hard, and both playing proper rugby. The support play was outstanding, and watching the ball move through hands with confidence was a real highlight.

Riley’s final word?

I'm really proud of how this team bonded, worked hard, and represented Yate Rugby with determination and heart.

A huge thank you to all the players, coaches, and supporters you make days like this unforgettable.

Well hello, rugby family. Try-Line Tilly here, and what a sensational morning of festival rugby we’ve just witnessed from our incredible Under 10s! If you wanted passion, teamwork, grit, and smiles wider than the Severn Bridge… this was the place to be!

From the moment the boots hit the grass, you could feel the buzz. Our U10s arrived fired up, bouncing through their warm-up and shaking off any pre-tournament nerves with a quick team chat. For some of our players, this was their very first taste of tournament rugby — but you would never have known. They stepped out with huge hearts and even bigger determination.

🔥 Game 1 — Straight Out the Blocks!

With only a bare eight players (through holidays), you’d think we might be on the back foot… but absolutely not!

Our defensive line was like a brick wall, shooting up fast and shutting down space brilliantly. The pressure paid off with multiple turnover balls — pure effort, pure teamwork. You could see the boys and girls growing in confidence with every phase. What a start!

💪 Game 2 — Grit Against Thornbury

Next up: a strong and physical Thornbury side who came ready to test us.

But our U10s? They rose to the challenge in style. We’ve been working hard on ripping the ball in the maul, and today… THEY MASTERED IT. Turnovers, quick offloads, and team tries that had the side line cheering loud enough to wake the whole of South Glos. The resilience was unreal, this team does not back down.

✨ Game 3 — Rugby at Its Finest

And then came the magic. Everything clicked. The rugby flowed beautifully.

Offloads into contact? Outstanding. Movement of the ball? Fast, controlled, Intelligent and Team chemistry? Absolutely electric.

This was some of the best attacking rugby we’ve seen from this group. Every single player contributed, every breakdown had purpose, every carry had determination. It was an absolute joy to watch.

🙌 A Shoutout to the Sideline Heroes!

A huge Try-Line Tilly thank you to all the parents and supporters! Your positive encouragement fuels these young players more than you know and those smiles after every try, tackle, and turnover prove it. Keep cheering, keep clapping, keep being amazing.

✨ Summary: Development. Teamwork. Smiles.

Today wasn’t just about results (although it does help) it was about progression, confidence, and joy. Our U10s came to play, they worked their socks off, and they represented the club with pride.

This team is growing fast, learning fast, and loving every second of it And that’s what rugby is all about.

Hello Yate Rugby family,

Clubhouse Connor here, your newest match-day reporter! It’s an absolute privilege to be joining this brilliant club and the already-iconic reporting team. From the moment I stepped onto the touchline, the warmth, passion, and sense of community made it clear: this is a club I’m proud to represent. Now… let’s talk rugby.

A Tough Day at the Office — But What a Shift!

After last week’s electric performance against Midsomer Norton, the U14s came into today’s clash with Stroud full of confidence and ready to go. Warm-ups were sharp, the intensity was high, and the lads were dialled in. Everything pointed toward another big performance.

And a big performance is exactly what they delivered even if the scoreboard didn’t tell the full story.

Stroud came ready to play too, and what followed was a proper, gritty, old-school rugby battle. One try separated the sides, with Stroud edging it 5–0, but make no mistake: this match was competitive from the first whistle to the last.

First Half Fire

Yate/Whitehall/Quins burst out of the blocks, controlling early territory and repeatedly punching into Stroud’s 22. Phase after phase, ruck after ruck, they built momentum and gained metres. The intention was brilliant the only thing missing was the finishing touch.

Despite wave after wave of pressure, the points just didn’t come. Rugby can be cruel like that, but the effort was undeniable.

Second Half Battle

Stroud managed to break through with a single second-half try, but what a response from our lads. They dug deep, tightened up defensive lines, and threw absolutely everything into the tackle contest.

This was a match decided by inches and today, unfortunately, those inches went Stroud’s way.

Standout Performances

Harry (Scrum Half) – An absolute engine today. Sharp breakdown work, superb delivery, tough tackles, and he bossed the forwards like a seasoned pro. Brilliant shift.

Renikos (Captain) – A leader through and through. Line breaks, power runs, and relentless effort. Set the tone all game.

Seb (Fly Half) – Tried everything to unlock the Stroud defence. Kicking, passing, stepping — the creativity was outstanding, but Stroud’s defensive wall held firm.

Logan – Carried hard, ran brave, and broke tackles for fun. A nightmare to bring down.

Flankers: Linden & Lucas Iles – These two tackled like their lives depended on it. Endless work rate, huge hits, and constant pressure. Outstanding from both.

And let it be said — the scrum today was a force of nature. Power, technique, and unity. It gave us a platform again and again.

Respect to the Opposition

A huge thank you to Stroud, organised, physical, and full of heart. They pushed us all the way and made this a brilliant contest. Exactly what youth rugby should be about.

We’ll take the learnings, tighten up the details, and look forward to the rematch. Because make no mistake… this team has something special about them.

Final Thoughts

It may not have been our day on the scoreboard, but in terms of effort, passion, and commitment? The lads left absolutely everything out there.

And from this old reporter’s viewpoint… that’s rugby at its finest.

Looking forward to many more games together.
