The Yate Rugby Blog

Sunday saw our U14 combination side take on Cleve RFC, a team with size, experience, and years together on the pitch. On paper, it looked like a tough ask. But from the first whistle, our lads showed exactly who they are: fearless, united, and determined. Tackles flew in, tries were scored, and belief never wavered. The score line may not have gone our way, but the rugby certainly did. I got to cover this match, Rugby Rose Reporting

💡 Standout Moment

The start. Plain and simple. The physical challenge in front of us never phased the boys. They met it head-on, with grit and teamwork that had the crowd on their feet. It was rugby at its best, belief, bravery, and brilliant spirit.

The Feeling

Before the game, there was a quiet buzz, maybe even a little doubt. By the final whistle, yes, the score looked harsher than the contest really was, especially after two late Cleve tries. But the mood was shaped not by defeat, but by respect. Two Cleve players came straight over to Seb, saying, “That was a lot closer than the scoreboard shows.” Those words mattered, they showed the mutual respect both sides carried throughout.

🏉 Who Impressed?

This was a true squad effort. The forwards stood tall, scrummaging hard and competing brilliantly at the lineout. In the backs, our strike runners found gaps and made real impact. Injuries to two key players early on could have rocked us, but the lads adapted and carried on. That resilience spoke volumes.

📖 What We Learned

Resilience. Pure and simple. Losses teach lessons that victories can’t, and every single player was reflecting, analysing, and already thinking about how to grow stronger for the next challenge. That isn’t a weakness, it’s the mark of a team on the rise.

🙌 Supporters

The Quins ground was alive with noise and encouragement. Parents, friends, non-playing teammates, even voices from the men’s teams, it was a wall of support that carried the boys through. Comments like “they played their hearts out”, “they fought to the last minute”, and from Cleve themselves, “your team have grown so much” tell the real story. This wasn’t just a game. It was a step forward.

🔑 In Three Words

Resilience. Grit. Learning.

📈 What This Match Means

If you want to grow, you test yourself against the best. Cleve provided that challenge, and our U14s showed they are building something special. This partnership — Yate, Quins, and Whitehall; is only 18 months old, but Sunday proved just how much it has already achieved. The journey continues: building, progressing, learning.

🤝 Our Opponents

Cleve were outstanding. Physical, skilful, and respectful. They understood exactly what this fixture meant to our young side and showed real sportsmanship before, during, and after the game. For that, we thank them. Matches like this grow not just players, but rugby itself.

This wasn’t a defeat. It was a marker. A bar raised. A step up. And from here, the only way is forward.

What a Saturday! Yate Rugby Men came away with a thrilling one-point win in their friendly clash against Old Sulians, and let me tell you — it was a game that had just about everything.

The first half was pretty cagey, with neither side finding much rhythm. But then came the moment of magic. A clever kick into the Yate half gave Evan Ridley-Demonick some space to work with. He linked up beautifully with Gary Cornish out wide, who popped the ball back inside to Evan. With the last defender drawn in, Evan set up the flying Ryan Holloway under the posts — a try straight from the training ground and my standout moment of the match!

Heading into the game, both teams knew it would be a bit of a mix-and-match selection, but a solid warm-up pulled everyone together. By the final whistle, the overriding emotions were relief and pride. Old Sulians threw everything at us in the closing stages, but the boys held firm to secure the win.

There were plenty of standout performances. Captain Brad Mears was immense — tackling anything that moved and running the lineout with authority. In the pack, Neil Olive put in a real shift both in attack and defence. In the backs, Jonny Graham was a wrecking ball at 12, carrying hard and creating space. But it was Evan Ridley-Demonick who walked away with Man of the Match, scoring twice and pulling the strings in midfield.

What did we learn? Well, this game showed that Yate have plenty of grit and fight to hold their ground under pressure. Still, there’s work to be done — particularly around breakdown discipline and decision-making, which cost us some field position and points.

A big shoutout to the travelling supporters who braved the wind and rain. Your cheers make such a difference, and the lads felt every bit of your encouragement.

If I had to sum it all up in three words?👉 Grit. Determination. Promise.

This was more than just a friendly. It was a valuable chance to test new combinations, give players game time, and build towards what looks like a really exciting season ahead.

Credit to Old Sulians too — they were physical, organised, and never went away. On another day, the result could easily have gone in their favour. I’ve no doubt they’ll be a real handful this season.

For Yate, though, it’s a confidence-building win on the road — and a great platform to kick on from. Bring on the next challenge!

What a way to kick off the season! Our Yate U16s took to the field against a tough Kingswood side last weekend and came away with a fantastic victory that was built on belief, focus, and enjoyment – three words that summed up the day perfectly.

💪 Standout Moment

The real highlight wasn’t a single try or tackle – it was the team belief. From the very first whistle, the lads genuinely believed they could win, and they carried that confidence right through to the final whistle. Even when the game tightened up at halftime, there was no panic. They stuck together, worked as a unit, and had each other’s backs throughout.

🔨 Forwards Leading the Way

If preseason was about hard graft, today showed the rewards. The forwards have been putting in serious work on scrums and lineouts, and it paid off in style. The lineouts were sharp and accurate, giving us the platform to build. Around the park, the pack were relentless – driving, carrying, and laying the foundation for everything good in the performance.

📚 Lessons to Take Forward

The message from this game is clear: when Yate U16s play to their strengths and stick to the game plan, they’ve got the skills to compete with anyone. With this being their first game of the season, it sets a brilliant tone – and the belief built here will only grow stronger.

👏 Support from the Side-lines

The support on the touchline was superb. Parents, friends, and non-playing teammates created a brilliant atmosphere, but what really stood out was the presence of the Yate men’s team, cheering the boys on. That kind of club-wide support shows what Yate Rugby is all about and no doubt gave the lads an extra boost.

🔄 A New Chapter

This season brings a new coach, a new voice, and a fresh way of thinking. To start off that journey with a win shows the players are buying into it already. That’s huge for the road ahead.

🤝 Respect for the Opposition

Full credit to Kingswood – they brought real power, especially in the scrum, and some strong runners who kept our defence honest. They’ll be a handful for any side this season, and we’re already looking forward to the return fixture.

🏆 Final Word

Believe. Focus. Enjoyment. That’s what defined the U16s on the day, and if they can carry that through the season, this win will be just the beginning.
