The Yate Rugby Blog

What a way to start the season! Under a gloriously deceptive November sun — which felt far more like midsummer than mid-autumn — Yate Academy U9s took to the pitch for their very first full-contact rugby match.

And best of all, I got to cover this one..

The nervous buzz among players and supporters was electric, and rightly so — this was a big step for the young squad!

Facing a well-drilled Frampton side, who already had a few games under their belts, our Yate youngsters rose to the challenge with courage, smiles, and a healthy dose of determination.

From the first whistle, Harry Coombs showed his intent, running hard and tackling even harder. Elijah threw himself into the defensive effort too, getting stuck in with some strong tackles. Eva, Charlie, and Henry all carried the ball with purpose, making great ground and never shying away from contact.

Jake was a whirlwind — tackling anything that moved and weaving through defenders with his trademark jinking runs. Despite taking an early knock, Evie grew into the game beautifully, showing real grit and composure. Harvey seemed to have a sixth sense for positioning, making several crucial tackles and reading the flow of play like a seasoned pro.

Leading from the front, captain Franklin was everywhere — tireless in defence, powerful in attack, and inspiring his teammates at every turn. Arne continued his impressive development with some fearless carries and textbook chop tackles, proving that all that training is really paying off.

As a team, Yate combined brilliantly, putting into practice everything they’ve been learning over recent months. They tested themselves in true rugby fashion — with heart, teamwork, and sportsmanship — and passed with flying colours. The coaches couldn’t be prouder and are already buzzing about what’s to come this season.

Credit, too, to Frampton, who brought a strong and spirited side led by their captain Noah. They started brightly, showing their experience and skill, but Yate’s young warriors dug deep and met the challenge head-on — a great contest played in the true spirit of the game.

After the final whistle, both teams headed into the newly revamped clubhouse, sharing food, laughter, and plenty of post-match stories. It was fantastic to see the players from both sides sitting together — muddy, smiling, and already talking about the next time they’ll meet.

Next up for Yate Academy U9s is the Thornbury Festival on November 16th — and if today’s performance is anything to go by, it’s going to be another cracker!

Well played, lads. Keep that fire burning 🔥

Until next time,

Cup Clash Ends in a Classic Final Score: Yate 6 – Chipping Sodbury 12

Rugby Rose: We couldn't decide who was covering this one, so we both came and what a match it was.  A true local derby, years in the making. Just over a mile separates these two clubs, but on Sunday it might as well have been a rugby world apart, as both teams brought everything they had to this long-awaited first encounter between their 1st XVs.

Rugby Rob: Well, Rose… it wasn’t quite the result we were after, was it? A tough day at the office for Yate against our local rivals, Chipping Sodbury.

Rugby Rose: You’re not wrong, Rob. The scoreboard might not have gone our way, but the effort certainly did. Both sides brought the heat from kick-off — real derby energy!

Rugby Rob: Absolutely. Yate showed great intent early on — strong carries from the forwards and some lovely link-up play out wide. We just couldn’t quite find that final pass or finish to turn pressure into points. In a pretty evenly contested fixture, Yate certainly held the upper hand in the scrums. Several dominant scrums were rewarded by the referee and helped keep the pressure on the home side.

Rugby Rose: And credit to Chipping Sodbury — they were clinical. Every time they got into our half, they made it count. Having had a great start to the season, the team will have not doubt learned from this game, the physicality of the Sodbury defence clearly showed why they too are unbeaten in the league this season too. When chances are so few and far between, discipline and accuracy becomes so much more important. That said, I loved how Yate kept fighting right to the final whistle. No heads dropped.

Rugby Rob: That’s what this club’s about, isn’t it? Pride and persistence. There were still a few standout moments — some big tackles, brave defensive sets, and flashes of creativity that show what’s building here. 3 words that sum up this match for Yate Passion, Parity, Pride

Rugby Rose: Exactly. You can’t coach heart, and Yate showed plenty of that. These games are all part of the journey — and you can bet the lads will bounce back stronger next week.

Rugby Rob: Whilst this was ‘only a cup fixture’, it was a chance to meet on of the leagues other form sides, testing ourselves against the best teams around will always grow the team and club further.

Rugby Rose: Having kept on eye on results across the seasons, getting the opportunity to go toe-to-toe gave Yate first had experience of what Sodbury has bought to all other teams this season already - ferocious defence and heart, from start to finish. The game plan was clear and well executed, stifling the Yate attack and allowing Sodbury to capitalise and secure the victory by the slim one-score margin

Rugby Rob: For sure. And as always, massive thanks to everyone who came down to support — the cheers from the touchline make all the difference. Being an away fixture just down the road, it was great to have so many there to support and cheer on the team, braving the inclement weather and providing a boost to the team.

Rugby Rose: Couldn’t agree more, Rob. Win or lose, the Yate family sticks together. ❤️💙

Sunday morning rugby doesn’t get much better than this one — Yate\Whitehall\Quin's U14s vs Keynsham in a contest that had everything: tackles, teamwork, and true grit.

Right from the first whistle, it was clear this was going to be a proper game of rugby.

Keynsham arrived with a reputation, big squad, slick handling, clinical finishers. However our lads weren’t fazed. They turned up ready to play their game, and what a performance it was.

The final score might have read 19–10 to Keynsham, but the numbers don’t tell the story. What unfolded over the 60 minutes was some of the best rugby this team has played all season. The defensive effort alone was worth the entry fee (if we charged one!). Every player threw themselves into tackles, shut down space, and made life difficult for a well-drilled opposition.

Our scrum and maul work was simply out of this world; dominant, disciplined, and determined. The forwards earned every inch, while the backs showed real courage with line breaks and counter-attacks that had supporters cheering from the side lines. This was a game of inches, and Yate fought for every single one.

What really stood out, though, was the team unity. Everyone put in a shift. Every player backed their mate. Every head stayed high. Against a big, powerful Keynsham side, our lads showed skill, bravery, and heart. All wrapped up in one brilliant display.

At full time, both teams came together in true rugby fashion — shaking hands, smiles all round, and mutual respect that reminded everyone what this game is really about. It wasn’t about who scored the most tries; it was about spirit, effort, and pride in the shirt.

The coaches couldn’t have been prouder. This was a performance that sets a standard, a benchmark for what this group can achieve when they trust their structure, their mates, and themselves.

Keynsham were strong, organised, and clinical and yet, the team made them earn every single point. That says everything about where this side is heading.

So, while the scoreboard didn’t go our way, the message from Rugby Rob is clear: this was one of the best performances yet from our U14s — full of fight, full of passion, and full of promise.

Well played, lads. Keep that fire burning 🔥

Until next time,
