The Yate Rugby Blog

What a contest this was. Yate Under 10s took on a fierce and determined St Bernadette’s side, and from the very first whistle you could see just how much the hard work on the training ground has been paying off. This wasn’t just effort — this was a team that knew what it was trying to do, and went out to do it together.

The team were buzzing from the start. St Bernadette’s came out fast, physical and aggressive, but Yate kept their heads, trusted their fundamentals and stuck to their rugby.

That composure paid off again and again, with turnovers being won through good body position, smart tackling and excellent support play. That’s the kind of rugby that wins matches long before the scoreboard ever tells the story.

A massive special mention has to go to Ollie. Not feeling 100%, but still turning up and putting in a huge performance — leading from the front, making things happen, and showing exactly what it means to play for your teammates. That’s proper rugby spirit.

What really stood out to me was how the team came together as one. The defensive line was hard to break, with players working for each other and filling gaps, and when Yate got their hands on the ball, they made the most of it — hitting rucks hard, securing possession and then breaking through with real purpose and pace.

The second half was a real test. St Bernadette’s didn’t let up for a second and managed to sneak a try or two, which made it tough to keep the pressure on. But credit to Yate — they adjusted, refocused and found a way to keep themselves in the game. That ability to adapt under pressure is huge for a group this young.

I also want to give a big shout-out to Dennis. Injured and unable to play, but still there supporting his mates from the side-lines. That’s not easy, but it shows how much this team cares about each other.

The opposition were relentless — quick, physical and always asking questions — which made this a proper rugby battle. And as always, the side-line support was absolutely dedicated, pushing the team on and creating a brilliant match-day atmosphere.

If I had to sum it up in three words?

Pressure. Teamwork. Pace.

Another strong showing from this Yate U10s group — full of grit, growth and that unmistakable love for the game. 💙💛

Yate Under 9s kicked off the new year in proper rugby style, welcoming St Bernadette’s to YOSC for the first fixture after the festive break — and what a lovely way to blow away the Christmas cobwebs it was. A crisp winter chill sat in the air, but the pitch was dry, the players were buzzing, and there was that unmistakable feeling of rugby being back where it belongs.

Both clubs arrived with strong squads and big smiles, and from the very first whistle you could feel the excitement. As you’d expect after a few weeks off, the opening moments were a little cautious — passes being tested, spacing being found again, and legs remembering what match day actually feels like. But it didn’t take long for the rhythm to return.

Once things settled, the game really came to life. Two brilliant styles of rugby were on show. Yate looked to play with flair and awareness, using quick feet, clever running lines and lovely little passes to find space. St Bernadette’s brought real physicality, running hard and tackling with real intent, asking serious questions of the Yate defence.

And oh, how Yate answered them.

As the match went on, the confidence grew. Tackles became firmer, support runners appeared exactly where they were needed, and the whole team started moving as one. By the final stages, the intensity had lifted right up — crunching tackles, determined runs, and huge smiles every time a teammate made a big play. It was proper, honest, joyful rugby.

What made it even more special was the wider scene. With five Yate teams playing five St Bernadette’s sides across the site, YOSC was absolutely buzzing. Laughter, cheers, and the sound of boots on grass filled the air — a perfect picture of junior rugby at its best.

And a massive thank you has to go to the parents and supporters from both clubs. Standing in the cold, clapping every tackle, cheering every run and encouraging every child — you made the morning feel warm, positive and full of energy.

A wonderful return to action for the Yate U9s, full of effort, enjoyment and promise. If this is how 2026 is starting, then I think we’re in for something very special indeed. 💙💛

As Rose covered the first match, I get to cover the second; Sideline Sam on duty for Dings 3s vs Yate 1s. And just as Rose mentioned… two Yate teams at home, both celebrating victories!

This one, though, was tight. Really tight. A proper arm-wrestle of a game that finished Yate 1s 14 – Dings 3s 12, decided by grit, heart, and a refusal to give in.

Standout Moments

There were several moments that all felt the same heroic goal-line defence. Time and again, when it looked like Dings would eventually force their way over, Yate held firm. A knock-on here, a turnover there, bodies on the line everywhere. Those moments don’t always make highlight reels, but they win games and this one was built on them.

Mindset: Before & After

Coming into the game, form had been a little mixed, and the squad were keen to find their rhythm again. Everyone knew Dings would be a strong outfit even more so with their 2nd team fixture falling victim to the weather. This was always going to be physical.

At full-time? A huge sense of pride. The lads knew they’d been through something tough together. A lot of hard, honest work and the reward to match.

Team Effort on Show

While there were strong individual performances across the park, what really stood out was the collective effort. This was a proper team performance, with everyone stepping up from recent weeks and buying fully into the task in front of them.

What Yate Did Well

Effort. Heart. Determination. Simple words, but absolutely spot on. The team showed exactly what they’re capable of when they dig in and back each other.

Looking Ahead

It’s very much one week at a time. This game was built on defence, and having delivered that today, the focus moves on lessons learned, confidence gained.

Respect to Dings

This was a bruising affair for both sides, but played in true rugby spirit. Dings travelled with great support, adding to what was already a cracking afternoon of rugby. On another day, they could easily have come away with the win which makes the return fixture in the new year an absolute mouth-watering prospect.

New Faces, Big Impact

As the season has progressed, new players have joined and others have stepped up from the 2s and today really felt like a whole-club effort, especially with the 2nd team playing alongside on the adjacent pitch.

A special mention to Matt Cook, who made his league debut. Before injury unfortunately forced him off, he showed exactly why he’s such an exciting addition experience, physicality, and plenty more to come.

Sideline Energy

The sun was shining, the club was buzzing, and with two home fixtures side by side, the atmosphere was spot on. That sideline energy kept spirits high and legs moving right to the final whistle.

Three Words

Pride. Determination. Reward.

A brilliant way to wrap up a memorable Saturday and a fitting end to the rugby year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the entire Yate family — we can’t wait to see what 2026 brings for this amazing club. 💙💛🏉
