This week marked a huge milestone for Yate Rugby as we played our first ever T1 Rugby match, away to at Whitehall Rugby Club for what turned out to be an incredible afternoon of fast-flowing, inclusive rugby.
From the very first whistle, it was clear this wasn’t just another game of rugby—this was something different, something exciting, and something that showcased just how inclusive our sport can be.

We played a mixed-gender, friendly T1 match—40 minutes of high-energy rugby where every pass, every break, and every try kept the crowd smiling. But here’s the twist: in T1 Rugby, it doesn’t matter how many tries are scored during the game—it’s the last try that wins it all.
And what a finish it was! Whitehall managed to score that all-important final try, taking the victory on the day. But for us, the real winner was rugby itself.
🌍 Rugby for Everyone

What made the day so special was the mix of players involved. Some had never picked up a ball before, others were seasoned players looking to try something new, and everyone joined together simply for the love of the game.
Coaches from both clubs were buzzing afterwards, saying how T1 Rugby could be used as a brilliant development tool for young players. It promotes support play, running lines, awareness of space, and switching on your rugby brain—all while keeping the game safe, fast, and fun.
🙌 A Shared Vision
Both Yate and Whitehall are building out their T1 sections with the same vision: to open rugby to more people than ever before. This first match showed exactly what’s possible when we create opportunities for people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities to come together through sport.
🎤 Over to Our Sideline Reporters: Rugby Rob & Rugby Rose

Rob: “Well Rose, I’ll be honest, I had no idea what T1 Rugby was before today. Thought it might be some sort of tech gadget. But watching that match? I’m hooked.”
Rose: “Same here, Rob! I don’t think I’ve laughed this much at a rugby game in ages. The speed, the skill, and the fact it all came down to that final try; it’s brilliant. And you know what? Because it’s non-contact, I reckon even we could give it a go!”
Rob: “Don’t tempt me, I’ve already pencilled in Monday night at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex. If Matt Kitson can ref, play, and be cheerfully tormented by his own team, then I’m sure I can manage a jog without embarrassing myself too badly.”
Rose: “Poor Matt, though every time he thought he had a moment to breathe, one of his own players was making him work twice as hard. And speaking of players, Nathanial’s pace had me out of breath just watching him. Blink and you’d miss him.”
Rob: “Oh, and Seb! Quick thinking, great fitness… and I swear I heard his mum on the side-lines pretending not to look tired just watching him. Classic.”
Rose: “The backline had some serious flair too. Char and Dannie ran it like a well-oiled machine. And then there’s Russell Smith, the wily old fox. Controlling the attack, commanding the defence… it was like watching a general run the battlefield.”
Rob: “In short, Rose, we came, we saw, we laughed, and now we want in. T1 Rugby isn’t just for players, it’s for anyone who loves fun, fitness, and a bit of friendly competition. Monday nights can’t come soon enough.”

💛 The Start of Something Special
Although Whitehall took the win this time, the smiles, laughter, and friendships made on the pitch proved what T1 Rugby is really about. It’s rugby stripped back to its core—teamwork, inclusivity, and enjoyment.
This is just the beginning for Yate Rugby and our T1 journey. The future is bright, and we can’t wait to see more people join us on the pitch for this exciting new format.
