From Tag to Tackle – A Parent’s Journey with Yate Rugby Academy

At Yate Rugby Academy, we pride ourselves on being more than just a rugby club—we’re a family, and no one knows that better than Chris, a dedicated parent and passionate supporter of his daughter Niamh’s journey in the sport.

A Warm Welcome from Day One

Niamh’s rugby adventure began with the Under-8s, where she took to Tag Rugby with enthusiasm. Despite joining an already established team, the support from both the coaches and her teammates made the transition seamless.

"What really caught my eye as a parent," Chris recalls, "was how welcoming and supportive the other children were. From the very first session, Niamh was included, encouraged, and made to feel part of the team."

This positive, inclusive atmosphere is exactly what makes Yate Rugby Academy special—we ensure that every player, no matter their experience level, feels valued and supported.

The Big Step Up – Entering the Contact Game

Fast forward to the Under-9s, and a whole new challenge presented itself—contact rugby. The introduction of tackling can be a game-changer for many young players, often bringing a mix of excitement and nerves. But thanks to the incredible development plan and structured coaching at Yate, this team has thrived.

"The transition to contact can be quite scary," Chris admits, "but the coaches have done an amazing job helping the team grow in confidence week after week. Niamh was nervous to start with, but WOW—how she has developed! Seeing her confidence soar has been incredible."

From Side lines to Superfans

Like many parents, Chris and his partner never expected to become ‘rugby parents’. Yet, week after week, as they watched their daughter push herself, learn new skills, and form strong friendships, they became fully invested in the sport, the team, and the club.

"I must admit, neither my partner nor I ever thought we’d be rugby parents—but now, we are 100% in! This club, this team, and the environment my daughter plays in is just fantastic. I can’t thank Yate Rugby enough for everything they’ve done."

A Club That Feels Like Home

Chris’s journey mirrors the experience of so many families at Yate Rugby Academy. It’s not just about rugby—it’s about community, growth, and shared success. Watching children gain confidence, develop resilience, and form lifelong friendships is what makes this club so special.

So, to the coaches, players, parents, and the amazing Under-9s team—thank you for creating a space where children like Niamh can thrive. And to Chris and all the other parents standing on the side lines, cheering on their kids—welcome to the rugby family!
